The Story Of The First Car Ever Made

When Was The Motorwagen Built?

Karl Benz finished the first iteration of his Motorwagen in 1885. He got a patent for it on January 29, 1885, calling it a "motorcar fueled by gas." The first car ever produced came out in several versions over the next few years. The Model 3 was originally shown at the 1889 World's Fair in Paris. Benz made the Benz Velo in 1894. It featured four wheels and is said to be the first motorcar to be mass-produced.

The Production Process

Karl Benz had been working on the Motorwagen in pieces since the 1870s, but he didn't see it come out until the middle of the next decade. It wasn't surprising that production was so slow, especially by today's standards, as this was the first car ever made. Benz made 25 Motorwagens between 1886 and 1893, which means he made around one car every three months. However, the slow output was fixed when the follow-up Benz Velo came out in 1894, and 1,200 of them were made.
