The Story Of The First Car Ever Made

How Much Did It Cost?

The Motorwagen's price tag was unexpectedly low. The car was so complicated and took so long to make that 600 German Goldmarks was a great deal. This was the same as $150 in 1886 or $4,500 in 2021. The Ford Model T was the first affordable car, and its lowest price ever was $260 in 1925, when the assembly process was at its peak. That would be slightly under $4,000 in today's money.

Success Of The Motorwagen

The Benz Patent Motorwagen was a huge hit by all accounts, and it helped Benz & Cie grow. By the end of the 19th century, Karl and Bertha's firm had grown so much that it had 430 employees, making it the largest car company in the world. Production was going rapidly, and in 1899 alone, Benz & Cie made an amazing 572 units. The Motorwagen led to other successful vehicles, such as the four-wheeled Benz Velo and the Hildebrand-Wolfmuller motorbike. As the expression goes, the rest is history.
